This game is in the true spirit of the NES classic, Dragon Warrior. It has the same format, a lot of the same variables (spells, items, monsters). The puzzles are fairly straightforward, searching in "logical" places can be rewarding, and talking with people often reveals relevant information. The graphics for monsters are cute and either small or very large for "boss" type monsters. It improves on the Dragon Warrior concepts in having Special Herb (that restores a relevant amount of HP deeper into the game), a tight terrain where it is easy to get from place to place despite the progress you have made in-game, and scales very well (you are never stuck trying to level/get more gold for as long as Dragon Warrior would force you to).
The inventory is very small, and you are left often having to drop items in order to get things you find. This creates strategy in that there are times you opt not to carry things like Antidotes (parts in the game you cannot be poisoned). However, throughout the game I felt forced to carry special items only significant to unlocking various parts of the map. When using the Magical Bottle or Mermaids Cloth, I then did not know if I still needed to hold on to it, or if I could get rid of it (TIP: you can discard all of these as they function in only one part of the game).
The encounter rate is *way* too high. It was extremely annoying moving 1 or 2 squares only to be forced to step through an often very predictable combat sequence. This made it feel like a grind, which was kind of lame. The Desert is the only place where encounter rate "feels" right. The way Defense/Strength play on how much damage you do/receive, and the damage done by spells is very contained, and does not create a sense of strategy that Dragon Warrior did. The exception are the "boss" monsters, which had a substantial amount of hit points (TIP: "Sleep" works very well on the Kraken and Scale Mail helped ward off dragon fire). At times the monsters seem a bit too random in theme. In the castle you suddenly face Robots, Masks (whatever that means) and a UFO (kind of random for the setting).
As with all yamagames, you can choose music off your device to play in each of the various terrains. This is nice, but there is no way to turn the sound effects off completely. Also, only one save slot for a character.
Overall, I really enjoyed this game, and despite the things mentioned, found it to be a great play. If you liked Dragon Warrior, you can prolly get into this :)
